Curved Spine -What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a disorder where the normal curve of the spine, or backbone, becomes abnormally bent. Normally, the spine curves slightly when looking at a person from the side, but the spine appears straight when you look at them head-on. Scoliosis is about two times more common in girls than boys, and while it can occur at any age, it is noticed in individuals over the age of 10-year-old. Scoliosis is hereditary in the sense that people with scoliosis are more likely to have children with scoliosis.
Types of Scoliosis
There are three basic types of scoliosis that can be diagnosed:
Functional: With this type, an abnormal curve in the spine develops due to an underlying condition. Having problems with the legs or hips, foot problems, or other conditions can cause the spine to bend and twist as the individual ages.
Neuromuscular: This version of scoliosis is caused by issues of how bones of the spine are formed. They are either fused too tightly and don’t allow flexibility or they are too loose and won’t support the body. Whatever the case may be, body weight and movement pull the spine out of shape.
Degenerative: Degenerative scoliosis is usually only found in older adults. It is caused by changes in the spine due to arthritis, degenerative disease, cancer, work-related injuries, or overuse.
