Herniated Disc

Herniated Disc Treatment from a Tacoma Chiropractor

When you have a neck or back injury, it can be difficult to complete daily tasks. A common injury, such as a herniated disc, can easily be treated at a chiropractor's office with non-invasive techniques.  Below, let's learn more about this common injury and understand how a chiropractor can help.

What Is a Herniated Disc?

The spine is made up of several bones called vertebrae.  In between each vertebra is a disc that is made of soft tissues.  The purpose of the disc is to act as a cushioning device, absorbing impact as people bend and move.  The disc is shaped like a donut, filled with a semi-solid substance.  Sometimes, though, the outer wall of the donut can become damaged and the semi-solid substance escapes.  This is what a herniated disc is.  Herniated discs most commonly occur with age, as the outer wall of the disc becomes brittle and more prone to breaking.  Herniated discs can also be caused by an acute injury or automobile accident.

What Are the Symptoms of a Herniated Disc?

The symptoms experienced with a herniated disc will vary depending on the location of the damaged disc.  Disc injuries that occur in the upper spine or neck region often impact the shoulders, arms, and hands.  People can feel anything from a dull ache to a sharp, stabbing pain.  Sometimes, a numbness or tingling feeling is felt through the upper extremities.  For disc injuries in the lower spine, similar pain sensations are common.  Pain will radiate outward from the buttocks, legs, and feet.  The same numbness feeling can happen in the legs as well.  People with disc injuries often report feeling clumsier than usual.  This can take the form of dropping objects or tripping more often.

How Can a Chiropractor Help?

A chiropractor works to keep the spine in alignment and restore balance to the body.  Sometimes, people who have a herniated disc have bodies that are placing too much pressure on the disc to allow it to properly heal.  A chiropractor can work with several techniques to restore balance to the body and remove undue pressure.  A chiropractor can use any combination of techniques including manual manipulation of the spine, stretching and strengthening therapy, massage therapy, or physical therapy in order to fix this.  Depending on your specific injury, a chiropractor will prescribe the correct treatment plan to help alleviate pain and heal your injury.
